In a significant effort to uphold environmental standards and combat waste mismanagement, the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) is set to launch surveillance operations throughout Uyo, the state capital, beginning November 1, 2024.
This initiative aligns with Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda, which emphasizes sustainable environmental practices aimed at reducing indiscriminate dumping and enforcing environmental laws, ultimately fostering a cleaner and healthier urban environment.
The operation signifies a pivotal advancement in environmental enforcement as AKSEPWMA collaborates with the Ibom Community Watch, a security outfit under the Ministry of Internal Security and Waterways, alongside the Nigeria Police.
Officers from the Ibom Community Watch will be strategically positioned across critical routes in Uyo, including Nwaniba Road, Four Lanes, Oron Road, Airport Road, and Shelter Afrique, among other key locations. This extensive deployment aims to deter environmental violations and address public health and safety concerns.
Dr. Prince Ikim, Chairman of AKSEPWMA, highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that environmental management has evolved from a mere political discussion to a pressing security concern in Akwa Ibom State. “In line with His Excellency’s ARISE Agenda, we recognize that our environmental challenges have reached a level that necessitates dedicated security measures. Our objective is not only compliance but to foster a culture of environmental responsibility throughout the city,” he stated.
Ikim also mentioned that the agency has retrained over 100 officers in intelligence gathering and environmental law enforcement, ensuring they meet the necessary character and technical standards for effective enforcement. “These officers have been prepared to perform their duties with professionalism, aiming not just to enforce rules but to inspire a collective commitment to environmental preservation,” he added.
He urged residents and stakeholders to support this initiative, emphasizing that public cooperation is vital for sustainable success. “This is not just about regulations—it’s about safeguarding the health and quality of life for everyone in Uyo,” he emphasized.
Reports indicate that Akwa Ibom State, through AKSEPWMA, has consistently held the title of Nigeria’s cleanest state for six consecutive terms, thanks to its ongoing waste management efforts. This new initiative marks a shift towards a more proactive environmental policy, aiming to position Uyo as a model for clean and secure urban living.
