In a thought-provoking keynote address at the 8th London Political Summit, former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, championed the idea of adopting an Afro-centric approach to democracy.
The summit, held at the House of Commons, Westminster, centered on the theme “How can the people, power, and politics sustain peace,” and emphasized the need for governance systems that resonate with African values and social structures.
Mr. Emmanuel argued that aligning democracy with the unique values, systems, and shared ideals of Africa would lead to more effective governance outcomes, challenging the Eurocentric model currently practiced in Nigeria. He stressed the importance of a governance framework deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of the continent for efficient service delivery to the people. He also asserted that bridging economic disparities and promoting social equity are pivotal steps in establishing and upholding lasting peace.
The parliamentary host, Hon. Paul Bristow, Member of Parliament for Peterborough, praised Mr. Emmanuel’s dedication to sustaining democracy through peaceful means and fair trade. He expressed optimism that localizing democratic practices could enhance their effectiveness in regions where democracy has been introduced.
Distinguished guests at the event included the President of Sierra Leone, H.E. President Julius Maada Bio, represented by the High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr. Morie Manyeh; Rt. Hon. Jonathan Ashworth, Member of Parliament for Leicester South, honored as Parliamentarian of the Year; current Governor of Akwa Ibom State, HE Umo Eno; Prof. Kishan Devani BEM; H.E.
