Prominent figures in Akwa Ibom State have criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio for reportedly spreading misinformation during a recent church gathering.
In a statement issued by the Ekid Nation Interest Forum, Akpabio’s remarks were labeled as “frivolous, deceitful, misleading, and inciting.”
The controversy erupted during a Thanksgiving service hosted by Governor Umo Eno in Eket on February 11, 2024.
Arriving late to the event, Akpabio purportedly claimed to have repurchased and revamped the Qua River Hotel in Eket, a statement vehemently disputed by the stakeholders.
Accusing Akpabio of insincerity, the stakeholders suggested that his sudden interest in Eket was politically motivated, especially in light of his recent declaration to contest for the governorship seat under the APC in 2027.
Furthermore, the stakeholders highlighted that Eket had initiated legal proceedings to reclaim ownership of the Qua River Hotel, casting doubt on Akpabio’s assertions of repurchasing the property.
Expressing skepticism towards Akpabio’s “superficial affection” for Eket, the stakeholders reiterated their trust in Governor Umo Eno’s leadership, believing that he would genuinely contribute to the local government’s development.
In a section of the communique, it was stated: “Akpabio is not the right person to advise Governor Umo Eno on matters concerning the people of Eket; he cannot be more devoted than the Governor, he cannot feel our struggles on our behalf.
“Fortunately, we have a Governor who listens, who prioritizes the welfare of his people over personal agendas. We are confident that Governor Umo Eno will oversee the construction of a modern hotel complex for Eket, bolster infrastructure, and increase governmental presence through the establishment of industries, tertiary institutions, and other infrastructure to restore our local government to its former glory as ‘Idung Mfianwe’.
“We urge Senator Godswill Akpabio once again to leave Eket be. He did not support us in the past, and we are not swayed by his sudden displays of affection.”
