Ibom Plaza, once a bustling and vibrant center in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, is now grappling with a surge in criminal activities, causing alarm among residents and visitors alike.
Reports indicate an increase in incidents such as phone and bag snatching, intimidation, molestation, and underage prostitution, tarnishing the image of this once serene location.
Constructed by former governor Victor Attah, Ibom Plaza was initially designed as a space for relaxation, recreation, shopping, and tourism. It featured an arena where churches held crusades, artists organized shows, and families enjoyed photo sessions amidst its beautiful and tranquil ambiance. However, recent events have cast a shadow over its reputation.
Incidents of phone snatching by hoodlums, primarily teenagers or young boys between the ages of 20 and 30, have been on the rise. Victims have shared their experiences of being robbed at gunpoint, with criminals disappearing into the crowd before they can react. Despite the presence of an emergency police post within the plaza, criminal activities continue unabated.
Effiong, a robbery victim, recounted how he was robbed of his phones and wallet containing N8,500. He expressed his fear and shock, mentioning that he was too traumatized to report the incident to the police. Similarly, Nsikak, another victim, described how a thief swiftly snatched his phone and vanished into the crowd while onlookers remained indifferent.
Concerns extend beyond theft to include cases of underage prostitution. Teenagers, dressed provocatively, are seen lingering around the vicinity, scouting for clients at drinking spots. These vulnerable girls, often mistaken for secondary school students, are reported to indulge in drugs to enhance their stamina.
The Ethical and Attitudinal Reorientation Commission (EARCOM) Chairman, Dr. Dorothy Thompson, strongly condemned the deteriorating situation at Ibom Plaza. She emphasized that such criminal activities misrepresented the state and could negatively impact its economic growth and reputation among investors and visitors. Thompson reaffirmed EARCOM’s commitment to raising awareness about the consequences of unethical behavior and working with security agencies to apprehend and prosecute those involved.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi, echoed this sentiment, reaffirming his dedication to combating crime and ensuring the safety of residents. He urged individuals to report any criminal incidents to the nearest police station for prompt action.
Efforts are now underway to address these concerns and restore Ibom Plaza to its former glory. The collective determination of government agencies, security forces, and community members will be vital in creating a safe and secure environment for all.
