The Police Command in Akwa Ibom has confirmed the abduction of Mr. Eyo Edet, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who is popularly known as Eyo Aswang.
He was taken by gunmen on Monday in Oron Local Council of the state. The Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi, has ordered an investigation into the incident.
The commissioner visited the scene of the abduction where a Sienna vehicle, used by the assailants, was found burnt. Odiko Macdon, the Public Relations Officer, assured that investigations were underway and expressed confidence in bringing the abductors to justice soon.
Eyewitnesses reported that Edet, the former Deputy Coordinator of Divine Mandate Organisation in Oron, was kidnapped from his filling station. The kidnappers fled with the victim in a Sienna vehicle before transferring him to a speedboat to escape into the creeks. As of now, the abductors have not made contact with Edet’s family.
In a separate incident, seven students from the University of Jos were abducted on Monday night from an off-campus hostel near the former School of Accountancy at Odus, Bauchi Ring Road. The students were studying for their ongoing examinations when the kidnappers arrived, fired shots into the air to intimidate bystanders, and forcibly took the students away.
The abductors later contacted one of the victims’ parents on Tuesday, demanding an undisclosed ransom. They promised to call back by 10:00 a.m. the next day, but had not done so at the time of reporting.
Abdullahi Abdullahi, the Senior Deputy Registrar of the University of Jos, stated that he couldn’t comment on incidents occurring outside the institution’s campus. Meanwhile, the State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident and assured that investigations were underway.
These recent cases of abductions have heightened concerns over the safety and security of individuals in both Akwa Ibom and Jos, prompting authorities to take swift action to rescue the victims and apprehend the perpetrators.
