The Akwa Ibom State Police Command in South-south Nigeria recently announced the arrest of a suspected ritualist found in possession of a human skull.

The disclosure was made by the police spokesperson, Odiko Macdon, during the second quarter news briefing by the State Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi.

The suspect, identified as Edu Ime from Mbak Etoi in Uyo Local Government Area, was apprehended on May 15th at the popular Urua Ekpa Junction along the Calabar-Itu Highway. According to Commissioner Durosinmi, the suspect failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for possessing the human skull but implicated their alleged ringleader, who is also suspected of involvement in ritualistic activities.

In the review of the police’s accomplishments over the past three months, Commissioner Durosinmi stated that a total of 269 suspects were arrested for various crimes, including murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, rape, and cultism.

Police spokesperson Odiko Macdon also disclosed that the police had apprehended a gang responsible for the kidnapping of a vice chancellor from a private university in the state on April 14th. However, the identities of the victim and the university were not revealed. The primary suspect, Prince Okon, was a former domestic worker who had been dismissed due to his involvement in criminal activities. The kidnapping was allegedly orchestrated by Okon in collaboration with two accomplices, Saviour Luke and Richard Friday. As a result of the operation, a ransom of N1,270,000 was recovered, along with N250,000 found in one of the suspect’s accounts. The Toyota Corolla used in the crime was also seized. The vice chancellor has since been reunited with his family.

Additionally, the police reported the arrest of five suspected cultists who were involved in causing unrest during a clash in the Nwaniba area and had been terrorizing residents of Uyo.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State has endorsed Governor Umo Eno as its sole candidate for the 2027 governorship election, despite the general election being over two years away.

The decision, announced at the PDP Enlarged State Executive Council Meeting on 6 January 2025, was formalized in a communiqué signed by the party’s state chairperson, Aniekan Akpan. The party cited Governor Eno’s “outstanding performance” and “exemplary leadership” under his Arise Agenda as reasons for the endorsement.

“His vision has delivered significant dividends of democracy for Akwa Ibom State,” the communiqué stated.

This move effectively excludes other aspirants within the party, consolidating Governor Eno’s position as the PDP’s flagbearer in a state that has remained a PDP stronghold since 1999.

Governor Eno, who assumed office on 29 May 2023, dissolved his cabinet hours before visiting the PDP state secretariat in Uyo on Saturday.

With opposition parties like the All Progressives Congress currently weak in the state, Governor Eno appears well-positioned for a second term in 2027.
