The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has appealed to the state House of Assembly to enact the Freedom of Information Act within the state.

During a courtesy visit to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr. Udeme Otong, NUJ Chairman Comrade Amos Etuk stressed the importance of domesticating the FoI Act in the state. He emphasized that this would facilitate journalists’ access to information and promote accountability among public office holders.

Comrade Etuk noted that only 16 states in the country have implemented the FoI Act and urged other state governments to follow suit. He highlighted how the domestication of the act could aid in achieving good governance and transparency in government affairs.

Committed to being a strategic partner, Etuk assured the speaker and the people of Akwa Ibom that the media community in the state would continue to report on government activities to foster good governance and ensure the welfare of the citizens.

In response, Speaker Otong assured that his leadership at the 8th Assembly would maintain a cooperative relationship with the media. He reaffirmed the Assembly’s dedication to providing training and necessary tools for the assembly press corps to enhance their performance.
