In a significant operation against fuel smuggling, the Akwa-Ibom State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has seized 8,400 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.
The illegal cargo was intercepted en route to Cameroon, concealed within 28 drums aboard a long wooden boat.
The state Commandant, Mr. Eluyemi Eluwade, revealed the details during a press briefing held in Uyo on Thursday. According to him, the seizure occurred on April 13 along the Mbo River, close to the international waters shared with Cameroon. The NSCDC’s marine unit, patrolling the area in a gunboat, spotted and pursued the suspicious vessel.
“The suspects, upon noticing our approach, dived into the river to escape arrest,” said Commandant Eluwade. He noted that the personnel on the scene refrained from using firearms due to the highly flammable nature of the cargo.
Each of the 28 drums found on board contained 300 litres of petrol. The NSCDC’s swift action underscores its ongoing commitment to curtail oil theft and illegal bunkering activities, which pose significant economic and environmental threats. The command reiterated its dedication to upholding law and order in Nigeria’s waterways, ensuring the security of national assets and resources.
