The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended eight individuals suspected of being involved in vandalism and theft-related activities.
Additionally, the NSCDC impounded a navy blue Toyota Camry containing 20 jerrycans of 25 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) in Akwa Ibom.
The NSCDC Commandant in Akwa Ibom, Mr. Eluyemi Eluwade, addressed the press at the command’s headquarters in Uyo on Thursday, providing details of the arrests and operations carried out by the agency’s personnel.
Eluwade disclosed that the suspects were arrested during routine operations within the month of August. They were taken into custody for various offenses including criminal conspiracy, vandalism of critical infrastructure, and theft of public property.
The Commandant outlined specific instances of the arrests, highlighting the efforts of the NSCDC in combating criminal activities related to their mandate. He mentioned that on August 2, NSCDC’s Anti-Vandals Squad arrested two suspects and seized a navy blue Toyota Camry with registration number SQ 694 KJA, along with 20 jerrycans of 25 litres of AGO, hoses, a funnel, and three 20-litre buckets.
Other arrests included suspects apprehended for criminal conspiracy, vandalism of critical infrastructure, and theft of public property at Mount Camel Hospital in Akpa Utung village in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area. Another individual was arrested for suspected trafficking of a young lady, with her whereabouts traced to Anambra.
Eluwade stressed the significance of curbing the activities of vandals and criminals, as their actions could negatively impact the Nigerian economy. He emphasized that a nation aspiring for development cannot afford to tolerate such criminal behavior.
He issued a warning to criminals, particularly those involved in vandalizing government infrastructure, urging them to change their ways or face legal consequences. He also encouraged residents of Akwa Ibom to provide credible information to support the NSCDC’s efforts in executing its mandate effectively.
The Commandant assured the public that thorough investigations would be conducted and that suspects would be brought to court once the inquiries are completed. This is intended to ensure justice and serve as a deterrent to others who might consider engaging in similar illegal activities.
