The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Akwa Ibom State has resolved a recent crisis that threatened the leadership of Prof. Emem Abraham and her Vice Chairman, Dr. Aniekan Utuk.

The national executive council of the association intervened to restore calm and reinstate Prof. Abraham and Dr. Utuk to their positions.

The crisis emerged following allegations of gross misconduct, high-handedness, and financial mismanagement, which led to their impeachment during an Ordinary General Congress at the NMA Secretariat in Uyo. Dr. Usenobong Morgan Akpan was appointed Acting Chairman in their place, with the decision ratified by a majority vote.

Prof. Abraham addressed the media at the officersโ€™ mess in Uyo, expressing gratitude to the national NMA leadership for conducting a thorough fact-finding mission. This mission culminated in unbiased resolutions that upheld her leadership and reinstated Dr. Utuk as Vice Chairman. The national body also issued a vote of confidence in their leadership, overturning the allegations as baseless.

Regarding other members involved in the crisis, the Secretary’s suspension was lifted pending referral to the disciplinary committee, while others faced similar disciplinary measures.

Prof. Abraham also announced preparations for the NMAโ€™s Annual General Meeting and elections for the 2024-2026 term, highlighting the proactive steps taken by her administration to ensure transparency and efficiency.

In conclusion, she emphasized that the allegations against her were unfounded and driven by individuals seeking power through illegitimate means. The resolution by the national body affirmed the integrity of her leadership and marked a return to stability within the NMA Akwa Ibom State chapter.
