NLC, TUC Strike Causes Blackout in Four States – PHED

by

The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) has accused the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of shutting out four states from the national grid due to their ongoing nationwide strike.

This situation has resulted in a complete absence of public power supply in Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom states.

A notice from PHED, made available to the Nation Newspaper in Calabar, indicates that Cross River and other states under the PHED distribution catchment area will experience a total blackout during the strike period until power is restored.

The notice reads in part: “We are experiencing a total blackout due to a nationwide grid shutdown by the Labour Union. Our customers in Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and parts of Akwa Ibom are currently out of supply. The Transmission Company of Nigeria is working to recover and stabilize the grid. We will keep you updated on the status of restoration.”

Our reporter observed that the public power supply is absent in Cross River and other states as stated by PHED, with Calabar being under blackout since morning.

The nationwide strike by the NLC and TUC was initiated due to the federal government’s refusal to meet the proposed new minimum wage of N494,000 and the recent hike in electricity tariffs.
