Nigerian Army’s 6 Division Destroys 233 Illegal Refineries in Anti-Oil Theft Operation

The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt has reported the destruction of 233 illegal refineries during “Operation Still Waters 3” in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta, and Rivers States in 2023.

Major-General Jamal Abdulsalam, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the division, revealed these figures during the 2023 West African Social Activities celebration of the army in Port Harcourt on Monday.

In addition to the refinery demolitions, Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam highlighted that 1,112 suspected oil thieves were apprehended, and 72 trucks and other vehicles were impounded during the special military exercise conducted across the four states.

He stated, “In 2023, we completed scheduled exercises with a lot of positive gains. Worthy of note is the field training exercise tagged ‘Exercise Still Waters 3.’ The exercise has gone a long way in curtailing criminal activities and other heinous crimes in the 6 Division’s area of responsibility.”

Throughout the operation, the military was successful in making significant arrests, destroying illegal refineries, and seizing over 1.1 million liters of illegally refined petroleum products. Additionally, they recovered more than 356 arms and ammunition.

Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam emphasized the Nigerian Army’s commitment to consolidating its achievements in 2023 and ensuring zero tolerance for oil theft in 2024. He expressed determination to defend democratic values and pursue criminals who threaten peace and stability in the Niger Delta and the country.

The GOC provided assurance that the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, would take all necessary measures to facilitate an increase in crude oil output in 2024.

NCC Seizes N23.1 Million in Pirated Books During Raids in Uyo

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has reported the confiscation of allegedly pirated books valued at N23.1 million during recent raids on bookshops in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State.

John Asein, the NCC’s Director General, emphasized that the operation aims to combat piracy across the nation and to establish a robust copyright framework. Represented by Macfoy Akachukwu, Deputy Director of Operations, Asein noted that the enforcement effort specifically targeted piracy in Uyo and its surrounding areas.

The NCC identified the raided bookshops as AB Achison, God’s Own, Academic Needs, Zion in Uyo, and POP Bookshop in Abak. Among the seized titles were *Basic Civic Education* by Dr. Merry Ukaegbu, *Spectrum New Further Mathematics* by T.R. Moses, and *Essential Christian Religious Study for Senior Secondary Schools* by Orovwuje B.O. and Okolie E.U. Other notable confiscated titles included *Macmillan Brilliant English for Junior Secondary Schools* by Wale Ossianwo and *New General Basic Science for Junior Secondary Schools* by S. Ajayi, among others.

Asein indicated that the seized books belonged to major publishers such as Evans, UPL, Lantern, Longman, TONAD, and Pearson. He reiterated the commission’s commitment to fighting piracy, empowering authors, and enhancing the creative sector to foster Nigeria’s economic growth.

“This operation is part of the commission’s mandate to protect and promote the rights of authors and other genuine investors in the copyright book industry,” Asein stated. He emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for piracy and copyright infringement under his leadership.

Furthermore, the NCC plans to prosecute those involved in piracy to serve as a deterrent to others. Asein called for public support in providing credible information to assist in the nationwide fight against piracy.

NAPTIP Rescues 6-Year-Old Girl Abducted in Akwa Ibom, Arrests Two Suspects

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has rescued a six-year-old girl who was abducted in 2018 in Akwa Ibom State.

The Uyo Zonal Commander, Mr. Emmanuel Awhen, revealed the successful operation on Thursday, conducted in collaboration with the Foundation for Justice Development and Peace. The girl was traced to a family in Uyo following an intelligence report.

NAPTIP also arrested two suspects connected to the abduction and is investigating another case involving the illegal sale of a two-month-old baby in the state. Awhen expressed concern over rising child trafficking cases and warned offenders of severe legal consequences.

After proper identification, the rescued girl has been reunited with her parents. NAPTIP reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating child trafficking and protecting vulnerable children, calling human trafficking a “senseless and barbaric act.”

Akwa Ibom Resident Arrested, Extorted by Police Over Phone Search Refusal

Nsikan Inyang, a resident of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, was arrested and extorted by police officers on Saturday for refusing to allow them to search his phone.

Inyang shared his ordeal on social media, explaining that he was detained, driven around Uyo in handcuffs, and eventually forced to pay N10,000 to secure his release without ever being taken to a police station.

In a later post, Inyang expressed his trauma after being dropped off far from his residence. He recounted how officers demanded money after he refused to unlock his phone, finally releasing him when a friend paid the extorted amount.

Following public outcry, the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU) initiated an investigation, and Inyang confirmed that the police refunded his money the next day. The Akwa Ibom State command also promised to investigate the incident further.
