The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has handed over 24,180 bags of 50kg maize and 5,828 bags of 25kg garri to the Akwa Ibom State government for distribution to vulnerable people across the state.
The distribution is in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to alleviate the impact of the economic downturn in the country.
While presenting the items in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, on Tuesday, NEMA’s Director General, Zubaida Umar, represented by Mrs. Mmandu Aisueni, Head of Operations for NEMA Uyo, outlined the distribution strategy. She emphasized that 20% of the food allocated for each Local Government Area (LGA) would be given to religious organizations, including the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), while 3% would be allocated to boarding schools within each LGA.
Aisueni added that the food distribution would be managed by committees formed in each LGA. These committees would comprise representatives from various groups, including the local government chairman, State Emergency Management Agency, traditional rulers, security agencies, faith-based organizations, and civil society groups. The inclusion of youth, women’s associations, and groups representing persons with disabilities was also highlighted to ensure the food reaches the most vulnerable populations.
The initiative stems from President Tinubu’s approval to release 42,000 metric tons of assorted food items, including maize, millet, sorghum, and garri, from the National Strategic Reserve. This is part of efforts to mitigate the rising food costs affecting Nigerians.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Akwa Ibom State government, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Offiong Offor, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his intervention. She acknowledged that food security is a top priority under the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to provide basic staples for vulnerable communities.
Ambassador Sunday Usikhifo Aniu, Personal Assistant to Governor Umo Eno on Volunteer Services, also commended the president’s efforts and pledged that the state would work closely with agencies like the ICPC and police to ensure the food reaches the intended beneficiaries. He further expressed the state’s continued support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, thanking him for his consistent interventions to help vulnerable populations.
