Journalists hailing from various media outlets in Akwa Ibom State underwent comprehensive training on the reporting of family planning services, advocacy, and sexual and reproductive health.
The three-day workshop, facilitated by the Development Communication Network and supported by The Challenge Initiative (TCI), featured resource persons from the organizing bodies as well as Family Planning officials from the state Ministry of Health.
In his opening address, Obasesam Edet emphasized the significance of equipping journalists from print, electronic, and social media platforms with the necessary skills to effectively report on Family Planning services. He highlighted his organization’s collaboration with state governments in stimulating demand for family planning services, citing its benefits in childbirth spacing and national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) enhancement.
Enobong Eshiet, the coordinator of Family Planning in Akwa Ibom State, revealed that 4.6 percent of adolescent girls aged 15-19 and 13.2 percent of women aged 20-24 in Nigeria utilize modern contraceptives.
The workshop featured sessions on leveraging social media for strategic family planning promotion, understanding cultural and religious contexts, as well as addressing trends, practices, and barriers associated with family planning. Additionally, attendees received guidance on crafting compelling human-interest stories related to family planning.
Various contraceptive methods were discussed, including pills, injectables, implants, condoms (male and female), vasectomy, and tubal ligation, with the emphasis that the right method is one that suits individual needs.
Furthermore, journalists had the opportunity to explore issues related to adolescent sexual health and visited a health facility in Oti, Okobo, where clients accessed family planning services.
Experts revealed that Akwa Ibom State has a 32 percent unmet need for family planning services, with a Contraceptive Prevalence Rate of 19 percent and a teenage pregnancy rate of 12 percent. Notably, family planning services are provided free of charge in Akwa Ibom State, covering both commodities and consumables.
