The Media Advocacy Group on Energy Transition (MAGET) has called on the Akwa Ibom State Government in Nigeria to domesticate the National Energy Transition plan.
During a one-day capacity development workshop for journalists, MAGET urged the state government to prioritize the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and 13 (Climate Action).
The communique issued at the end of the workshop emphasized the need for the state government to reduce fossil fuel-based power projects, invest in research and home-grown innovations on clean energy, and provide training and capacity building for youth and women in large-scale renewable energy projects.
MAGET also urged the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) to commit fines for gas flaring and called on the Management of Host Communities Development Trusts to invest in green and renewable energy projects.
The group encouraged journalists to report on energy transition, spotlight research findings on home-grown solutions, and create awareness while supporting state government initiatives aimed at raising revenue in non-oil sectors.
