MainOne, an Equinix Company, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully landing the 2Africa subsea cable system at Qua Iboe, Akwa Ibom state.
This marks the connection of Akwa Ibom State and other underserved/unserved regions in Nigeria with Europe, Asia, and other parts of Africa through the largest cable in the world.
The landing of this 180 tbps capacity submarine cable infrastructure is poised to accelerate the proliferation of 4G, 5G, and fixed broadband accessibility, thereby supercharging digital transformation across critical sectors of Nigeriaโs economy.
Mr. Abayomi Adebanjo, Regional Business Head of MainOne, emphasized that the aim of this milestone is to provide broadband internet capacity to underserved and unserved markets in Nigeria, democratize broadband access, and empower businesses, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and other sectors to thrive in the digital age.
Adebanjo highlighted the significance of the first submarine cable landing system in a coastal state outside of Lagos and the first in the Niger Delta Region. He noted that it aligns perfectly with the key success parameters outlined in the National Broadband Plan, enhancing the nationโs digital infrastructure resiliency and ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for all Nigerian citizens.
Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom state acknowledged the developmental impact of the cable landing, stating that it will position the state as a hub for ICT innovation, economic growth, and technological advancement. He pledged his administration’s commitment to supporting creative entrepreneurship projects and leveraging the infrastructure to boost the technology drive of the state’s agenda.
Eno urged the youth to seize the opportunities provided by the submarine cable to explore their potential in Information and Communication Technology, emphasizing the high-speed broadband infrastructure that it brings to Akwa Ibom State.
