John Obot from Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, has achieved a remarkable feat by breaking the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest marathon read-aloud event.
Obot surpassed the previous record of 124 hours set by Rysbai Isakov, an Indian who held the title.
John Obot began his reading marathon on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at Cityview Hall (LETTERS HOUSE), Watbridge Hotels & Suites in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, at 1 pm. His initial attempt was marred by technical hitches and power failures, which invalidated his effort after over 45 hours.
However, Obot persisted, and on Monday, September 18, 2023, he reached a staggering 145 hours of continuous reading. Even then, he expressed his intention to continue reading until 10 pm on Monday, thanking everyone present for their support.
The event, known as ‘Readmania,’ garnered significant attention and support, with the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Akon Eyakenyi, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Enobong Uwah, Commissioner of Education Idongesit Etiebiet, and other notable politicians and indigenes in attendance.
John Obot’s achievement is a testament to his dedication and love for reading, and it has earned him a place in the Guinness World Records. He is the son of the late journalist John Obot, who served as the Akwa Ibom State correspondent for the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) and who passed away while in active service.
This accomplishment is a source of pride for Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria as a whole, highlighting the value of education and the passion for knowledge.
