Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reaffirmed his plans to reorganize the State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development by creating a separate Ministry for Youth Development in his next State Executive Council.
This new ministry will be led by a commissioner who is a youth, reflecting the administration’s commitment to empowering the younger generation.
Governor Eno made the announcement during a youth appreciation and engagement rally at the Uyo Township Stadium, where he expressed gratitude to the youth for their non-participation in the recent #Endbadgovernance protest. As part of his administration’s efforts to uplift young people, the Governor also unveiled an empowerment plan for 100,000 youths across all 31 local government areas, set to begin in October 2024.
In addition to the new ministry, the Governor instructed the Ministry of Labour and Manpower Development and the Office of the Senior Special Assistant on ICT to create a youth employment database. This database will serve as a resource for the State Government, investors, and other organizations to hire based on qualifications. A one-off business support scheme, offering N50,000 each to 60,000 youths (5,000 monthly), will be drawn from this database over a 12-month period. Furthermore, 10,000 youths will benefit from the ARISE Entrepreneurial Scheme aimed at supporting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Governor Eno, also an entrepreneur, acknowledged the youth’s role in maintaining peace in the state and emphasized the importance of their cooperation. He lauded their decision not to join the protest, citing concerns about potential hijacking of peaceful demonstrations. The Governor also announced additional youth-focused initiatives, including a skills acquisition program, increased bursaries for students, educational grants for students with disabilities, and an Entrepreneurial Accelerator Programme with financial support.
The Governor ended the rally by donating N20 million and a new bus to the Ibom Angels, the state’s female football team, in recognition of their recent promotion in the Nigeria Women Football League. Other stakeholders in the youth sector also expressed their support for the Governor’s leadership and initiatives aimed at empowering the youth of Akwa Ibom.
