Governor Umo Eno Extends Olive Branch to Defected PDP Members, Calls for Unity

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has reached out to members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state who had defected to other political parties due to their grievances, urging them to return to the party.

The governor pledged his commitment to revitalizing the PDP in the state through a process of reintegration and progressive initiatives starting from the grassroots level to the state’s overall structure.

Speaking during a visit to the party’s state secretariat in Atan Offot, Uyo, the governor expressed his gratitude to PDP members for their support, which played a pivotal role in his victory in the 2023 governorship election.

“We are here today to express our appreciation to the PDP in Akwa Ibom State. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the PDP family in every ward and local government area of the state. Thank you for standing by us, for canvassing on our behalf. It was a collective effort, and together, we emerged victorious.”

The governor also acknowledged the efforts of his predecessor in ensuring the success of the party during the polls. He expressed gratitude to all Akwa Ibomites, regardless of party affiliation, who supported him and entrusted him with the privilege to serve.

Governor Eno announced that a statewide ward meeting of the PDP would take place on Saturday, August 26, 2023. As the party’s leader, he emphasized the need to fortify and rejuvenate the PDP at the grassroots level, calling for a fresh campaign of reintegration within the party’s ranks in every ward.

He recognized the ward as the strongest unit of the party, emphasizing the importance of intentional actions by stakeholders and leaders to consolidate its influence and maintain close engagement with party loyalists.

The governor stressed that the most meaningful way to demonstrate appreciation to the party and the people of Akwa Ibom State was by implementing policies, programs, and projects that prioritized the welfare and aspirations of the citizens, propelling the state to greater heights.

“We will do everything within our power to express our gratitude. Our policies and programs will serve as testimony to our thankfulness. We will show the people that our appreciation goes beyond words and that we are genuinely grateful for the opportunity to serve. We will continue to strive for progress and ensure that Akwa Ibom moves forward.”

The Chairman of PDP in the state, Hon. Aniekan Akpan, commended the governor for his exemplary governance style since assuming office. He assured the governor of the party’s unwavering support and commitment to his success.

“As a party, we commend you for your outstanding governance style. You have embarked on numerous projects, and I believe this trend will continue. We will stand by you and follow your leadership, which undoubtedly leads the state forward.”

The dispute surrounding the October 5 local government election in Essien Udim, Akwa Ibom State, is gradually subsiding after the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Enobong Patrick Friday, issued a congratulatory message to his rival, Ntiedo Usoro of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was declared the winner.

Essien Udim, the home of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, became the center of attention when the local Returning Officer, Professor Inyang Ating, initially announced the PDP candidate as the winner with 55,612 votes, compared to Usoro’s 686 votes. However, the next day, Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) Chairman, Elder Aniedi Ikoiwak, declared Usoro of the APC the winner, stating that he had secured 51,751 votes, while the PDP received 22,799 votes.

The sudden reversal sparked protests from PDP stakeholders, who alleged the result was manipulated to favor the Senate President. Some commentators described the decision as a “political palliative” to maintain the relationship between Governor Umo Eno and Akpabio.

Professor Ating’s earlier declaration was dismissed by AKISIEC as fake, with Ikoiwak clarifying that Ating was not officially appointed as Returning Officer and had no authority to announce the results. The legitimate Returning Officer, Professor Uduak Okon, had submitted the official results that declared APC the winner.

After days of silence, the PDP candidate, reportedly under pressure, congratulated Usoro in a message aimed at reducing tensions in the state. In the message, Friday pledged his support for Usoro’s administration, emphasizing the need for governance over electoral disputes.

Despite this, some PDP members have expressed dismay, calling the situation a conspiracy to undermine the will of the people. They raised concerns about the influence of the governor over the state’s electoral commission and its impact on election outcomes.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured victory in 30 out of the 31 local government areas in Akwa Ibom State, according to a statement issued by Mr. Aniedi Ikoiwak, Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC).

The All Progressives Congress (APC) claimed the only win in Essien Udim, the local government area of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

While the elections were generally peaceful, violence occurred in some areas. In Ikono, two people were reportedly killed, and the AKISIEC office in Ibiono Ibom was set on fire, though the election materials remained intact, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John.
