In the state, two officers and a women leader from the PDP’s Onna local government area (LGA), which is the LGA of Governor Udom Emmanuel, have defected and joined the Young Progressives Party.
In a statement released on Friday, Usenobong Akpabio, the state’s chairman of the YPP’s defection and inter-party committee, said that approximately 580 other officers from other local governments have lately joined the party.
Following the defection and subsequent appearance of Bassey Akpan, the senator who previously represented Akwa Ibom North East in the National Assembly, as the YPP’s candidate for governor of Nigeria in 2023, the party experienced a mass exodus.
Akpabio, who is also the YPP’s senatorial contender for Akwa Ibom North East, claimed that new members are joining the party every day.
He said, “As of 31st July, I had counted 580 officers. The defection is ongoing, a lot of officers are leaving the PDP. Like on Monday 15th of August, two officers, and a woman leader from Onna left the PDP and joined us.
“I have their records. I have their resignation letters. They have formally enrolled in the YPP as members. Membership registration is ongoing. Officers of the PDP are defecting from all the local government areas across the state but in Ibiono Ibom, the defection is massive.
Ibiono Ibom has the largest number of officers of PDP defecting to the YPP. From the chapter chairman to the ward chairmen, to other officers.”
However, the majority of the PDP-defecting officers’ membership resignation letters have been published on Facebook.
Along with the party officials, Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo, a representative for the Ikono/Ini state constituency, and Mr. Usoro Akpanusoh and Mr. Nana Udo, representatives for the Edit Eket/Ibeno and Ikono state constituencies, respectively, have both defected to the YPP.
Remember that in addition to the two special assistants to the governor who earlier resigned, the chief of staff to the governor, Mr. Ephraim Inyang, and the previous commissioner for labor and manpower planning, Mr. Sunny Ibuot, who resigned from the state executive council in March, have joined the YPP.
