The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Alkali Usman, has inaugurated a Special Protection Unit Base of the Nigeria Police Force (SPU- Base) that was initiated and implemented by Akwa Ibom Governor Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

The Special Protection Unit Base 27 was inaugurated on Wednesday in Awa, ONNA Local Government Area.

Governor Udom Emmanuel commended the IGP for inaugurating the SPU and sanctioning additional equipment for the base’s smooth start-up, and reaffirmed his commitment to working with the Nigeria Police Force to protect lives and property in the state.

“Today, I’d like to express my gratitude to the IGP for making time, despite all of his other responsibilities, to come here and commission this amazing facility; not just the greatest in the south south, but the entire country.”

“I also want to reassure all security services in the state of our cooperation, partnership, and collaboration to achieve our principal aim and purpose, which is to protect lives and property as our civic and collective responsibility to our people.”

Governor Emmanuel also provided 15 more functioning vehicles to support the police, as part of his demonstration of his commitment to delivering on his promise of 100 vehicles to the police.

“The Commissioner of Police will tell you that we are working toward a goal of supplying 100 vehicles to support the police.”

“We’ve been buying and will continue to acquire, but for the time being, I have 15 vehicles on the ground: ten Sienna buses and five brand new Hilux trucks, all completely equipped with communication devices to launch this base.” The Governor added, “We don’t want this base to be immobile.”

The Inspector General of Police, Alkali Usman, praised Governor Emmanuel for taking the initiative to build an ultra-modern Special Protection Unit, which he characterized as a legacy that illustrates the governor’s dedication to the state’s security.
