Former Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, has emphasized the importance of a private sector-driven economy in Nigeria, as it plays a significant role in providing the necessary investment to foster economic growth and job creation.
He called on governments at all levels to create opportunities for private sector investment, while ensuring an enabling environment that encourages entrepreneurship, innovation, investment, and wealth creation.
Speaking as the Chairman of Akwa Ibom Dialogue during the formal launch of Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda in Uyo, Senator Udoma stressed the need for effective implementation of government policies, as the non-implementation of such policies has been a major challenge in governance.
He encouraged Governor Umo Eno to focus on policies that make Akwa Ibom State an attractive investment destination within Nigeria and Africa, with a special emphasis on job creation. Recognizing the vital role of the private sector in economic growth, Senator Udoma emphasized that most of the jobs created must be in this sector.
“To achieve success, we must set ourselves ambitious targets. Your Excellency, fellow Akwa Ibomites, let us think big,” he stated.
Governor Umo Eno then outlined his ARISE agenda, which is centered on Agriculture, Rural Development, Infrastructure, Security, and Education. He urged all Akwa Ibom people, regardless of political affiliations, to take ownership of the dream and work together to realize its objectives.
The ARISE agenda is further broken down into 17 focal sectors, and Governor Umo Eno called on the incoming Executive cabinet to embrace the new template for governance. He made it clear that excuses would not be tolerated in his administration, emphasizing the need for results and efficient implementation of policies.
Addressing the gathering as the special guest of honor, the immediate past governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, urged the people to cooperate with Governor Umo Eno to achieve the ARISE agenda. He expressed confidence in the state’s human resources and highlighted that proper execution, planning, and acceptance of the agenda were essential for its actualization. He also warned against distracting the governor with negative comments, emphasizing the need for support and unity.
Former Governor, Obong Victor Attah, speaking at the event, described the ARISE agenda as the restoration of his fading dream for the state. He emphasized that the policies derived from the dialogue and the blueprint of the agenda must be effectively implemented to ensure progress and development in the state.
