The Federal Government said Monday that completing Sections I to V of the East-West Road, which spans five states in the South-South zone, will cost more than half a trillion naira.

Dr. Babayo Ardo, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, announced this at a stakeholders meeting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on the “Access Management and Mitigation Action Plan.”

The dual carriageway, which was designed to function as a regional spine on the East-West axis, would promote unimpeded movement of goods and passengers in the Niger Delta area, according to Ardo, who was represented by the ministry’s Director, Housing and Urban Development Department, Michael Oloruntola Olufemi.

Access Management and Mitigation Action Plan, Corridor Development Plan and Collaboration, and Corridor Preservation Project are three vital aspects of the East-West Road initiative, according to the permanent secretary.

He said that, like most federal roads in Nigeria, the East-West road corridor is being impacted by settlement growth in several towns and cities along the route, including Ughelli, Patani, Port Harcourt, and Eket.

“It is for this reason that the ministry established the supplemental program to unite community efforts to develop, defend, and manage the road corridor in order to curb the natural tendencies of settlement growths towards it,” he said. This would ensure that the road development’s goals, targets, and expected Return on Investment (ROI) are not lowered or lost.”
