Tragedy struck along the Calabar-Itu Highway in Akwa Ibom last weekend as a fatal auto crash resulted in five fatalities and left eleven others injured.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday afternoon, involved a Nissan Caravan with registration number GWB532XY and a Mark Truck without a registration number. The casualty figures were confirmed by the authorities of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Sunday evening.
The crash, attributed to overspeeding, took place around 3 pm near Ayadehe on the Itu-Calabar road. According to the Public Enlightenment Officer of the Akwa Ibom Sector Command of the FRSC, Paul James, three of the five females and two of the eleven males involved in the accident were confirmed dead. The remaining eleven individuals, both males and females, sustained injuries of varying degrees.
Upon receiving the report, FRSC operatives promptly mobilized to the crash scene. The injured were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the morgue.
In response to the incident, the sector commander issued a warning to road users, especially motorists, against overspeeding, wrong-way driving, and indiscriminate parking. Emphasizing the importance of safety consciousness, the sector commander, Matthew Olonisaye, advised passengers to speak up if they observe any deviation from road safety measures.
The FRSC expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery to those injured in the tragic accident.
