EFCC Secures Conviction of Eight Internet Fraudsters

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Uyo Zonal Command, has successfully prosecuted and secured the conviction of eight individuals involved in internet fraud in Cross River State.

This achievement was announced by the EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, who detailed the convictions overseen by Justice Rosemary Oghoghorie of the Federal High Court in Calabar.

The convicted individuals and their charges include:
1. Abasiofon Daniel Essien (aka Jason Momoa)
2. Gideon Junior
3. Edikan Ubong
4. Harrison Chiemelie
5. Ndifereke Umoh
6. Christopher Promise
7. Effiong Wisdom
8. Godswill Nsikan

They were prosecuted separately on charges related to criminal impersonation, identity theft, and obtaining money by false pretense. The charges against them ranged from fraudulent possession of specific amounts of money to impersonation on social media platforms.

Key details from the charges include:
– Abasiofon Daniel Essien was found guilty of taking possession of $300 as proceeds from identity theft.
– Effiong Wisdom, impersonating as Pamela Randy, fraudulently obtained $170.
– Each defendant pleaded guilty to their charges, after which the prosecution presented their confessional statements and incriminating evidence from their mobile phones.

Justice Oghoghorie sentenced each of them to two years in prison, with options for fines for some:
– Umoh, Promise, Chiemelie, and Nsikan were given the option to pay fines ranging from N1 million to N2 million.
– Essien, Junior, Ubong, and Wisdom were given fines ranging from N1 million to N1.5 million.
– Additionally, restitution orders were issued for various amounts to be paid back to their victims, along with the forfeiture of their phones, deemed tools of their crimes.

The EFCC emphasized its commitment to combating cybercrime and ensuring perpetrators face justice, urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

This conviction underscores the EFCC’s efforts to clamp down on fraudulent activities and protect the public from financial scams facilitated through digital platforms.

NAPTIP Rescues 6-Year-Old Girl Abducted in Akwa Ibom, Arrests Two Suspects

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has rescued a six-year-old girl who was abducted in 2018 in Akwa Ibom State.

The Uyo Zonal Commander, Mr. Emmanuel Awhen, revealed the successful operation on Thursday, conducted in collaboration with the Foundation for Justice Development and Peace. The girl was traced to a family in Uyo following an intelligence report.

NAPTIP also arrested two suspects connected to the abduction and is investigating another case involving the illegal sale of a two-month-old baby in the state. Awhen expressed concern over rising child trafficking cases and warned offenders of severe legal consequences.

After proper identification, the rescued girl has been reunited with her parents. NAPTIP reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating child trafficking and protecting vulnerable children, calling human trafficking a “senseless and barbaric act.”

Akwa Ibom Resident Arrested, Extorted by Police Over Phone Search Refusal

Nsikan Inyang, a resident of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, was arrested and extorted by police officers on Saturday for refusing to allow them to search his phone.

Inyang shared his ordeal on social media, explaining that he was detained, driven around Uyo in handcuffs, and eventually forced to pay N10,000 to secure his release without ever being taken to a police station.

In a later post, Inyang expressed his trauma after being dropped off far from his residence. He recounted how officers demanded money after he refused to unlock his phone, finally releasing him when a friend paid the extorted amount.

Following public outcry, the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU) initiated an investigation, and Inyang confirmed that the police refunded his money the next day. The Akwa Ibom State command also promised to investigate the incident further.

Gunmen Abduct Journalists Traveling to Uyo for Super Eagles Match

Gunmen have abducted journalists traveling from Lagos to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, for the Super Eagles match against Libya.

The attack occurred on Wednesday along Isseke-Orlu Road in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The attackers stopped the journalists’ bus and forced them into a nearby bush. The exact number of abducted journalists is unclear, but sources estimate at least 10 were taken.

The Anambra State police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack and stated that a joint security team is actively searching for the victims and perpetrators.

In an update, Mr. Ikenga announced that the security team has rescued six of the abducted journalists. However, the search for the remaining crew member continues.

Anambra State has experienced a significant deterioration in security, with frequent attacks targeting security agencies, government officials, and facilities. The Nigerian government has blamed the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for these attacks, but the group has denied any involvement.
