The Court of Appeal in Abuja has invalidated the election victory of Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo, the representative for Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency in Akwa Ibom state.
The lead judge, Abba Mohammed, declared that the declaration of Ukpong-Udo as the election winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) violated the Electoral Act 2022 and Manual for Election Officials 2023.
This decision affirmed the judgement of the Akwa Ibom Election Petition Tribunal, which had previously nullified Ukpong-Udo’s victory.
The tribunal had called for a re-run in 33 polling units where the election was not held during the National Assembly election in February 2023.
Ukpong-Udo, initially elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019, later defected to the Young Progressive Party (YPP).
