The Center for Human Rights and Accountability Network (CHRAN), Akwa Ibom State Council, has appealed to the state House of Assembly to accelerate the legislative process for the passage of the Bill for a “Law to Establish the Ibom Oil and Gas Corporation and for Other Purposes Connected Thereto.”

Sponsored by Prince Ukpong Akpabio and nine other lawmakers, the bill has successfully passed its second reading.

During a press briefing in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Director of CHRAN, Franklyn Isong, and Secretary Christopher Ekpo highlighted the significant benefits of the proposed legislation for the state. They emphasized CHRAN’s commitment to ensuring that the bill progresses to enactment, citing previous instances where similar bills faced challenges on the floor of the House.

Isong underscored the importance of the bill in facilitating the acquisition of petroleum products, tank farms, distribution facilities, and investments in refineries and petrochemical processing. He emphasized that the establishment of the Ibom Oil and Gas Corporation would create employment opportunities for unemployed Akwa Ibom indigenes, generate revenue, and drive economic growth and regeneration by harnessing the state’s vast oil and gas resources.

CHRAN called on members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, the Executive Arm of the Akwa Ibom State Government, and all stakeholders to prioritize the swift passage of the bill, followed by timely assent by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
