In a recent jail delivery exercise, Ekaette Fabian Obot, the chief judge of Akwa Ibom State, facilitated the release of 57 awaiting trial inmates from correctional facilities.
The chief judge personally reviewed all awaiting trial cases during an inspection visit to the four Custodial Centers in the Command, resulting in the release of 4 inmates at Ikot Abasi, 6 at Eket, 14 at Ikot Ekpene, and 33 at Uyo.
During the visit, Chief Judge Ekaette Fabian Obot acknowledged the Nigerian Correctional Service for its commendable efforts in providing safe, secure, and humane custody for the inmate population. She commended the controller of corrections, officers, and personnel of the command for maintaining a clean environment in the Custodial Centers and ensuring the well-being of the inmates.
In response, Julius Ezugwu, Controller of Corrections, Akwa Ibom State Command, conveyed gratitude on behalf of the Command to Chief Judge Obot and the entire judiciary for their collaborative efforts.
He emphasized the pivotal role of the judiciary as the last hope of the common man.
Controller Ezugwu also appreciated Chief Judge Obot for not only granting mercy and pardon to the inmates but also going the extra mile to provide relief items and welfare packages, including mattresses, drugs, and toiletries, to the inspected centers.
He urged the released inmates to exhibit good behavior, abstain from criminal activities, and make the most of the skills they acquired during their time in the facilities.
In a gesture of appreciation, the inmates of Medium Security Custodial Center Uyo, representing others, presented a beautifully crafted handbag to Chief Judge Ekaette Fabian Obot.
