Youths in Akwa Ibom State have defied their elders and stakeholders who sponsored Pastor Umo Eno as their governorship candidate by choosing Mr. Onofiok Luke, chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Judiciary.
The youngsters, who met yesterday under the banner of the Akwa Ibom Youth Stakeholders Mandate, stated that while they would not go against their elders’ decisions, they believed they should have a say in who becomes the next governor and who leads the youths in the next election cycle.
“With that said, we agree with what the stakeholders have done since we believe fathers are for guidance and sons are for speed.” Stakeholders have pointed us in the right path and told us that we can anoint and adopt a candidate. We believe it is equally feasible to anoint and embrace a candidate as young people.”
The youngsters, whose resolution was delivered by Mr Victor Thompson, the speaker of the South South Youth Assembly, said they chose Luke because of his shown track record of selfless service, dedication, and commitment.
“We need someone who has worked their way up through the ranks, someone who shares our passion, someone who understands what it means and feels like to be a young Nigerian struggling to rise through the ranks to become someone.”
We need someone who would provide a fair playing field for the young people of Akwa Ibom State to become anyone they want to be, because our vision is for Akwa Ibom State to be a place where the sons of nobody become somebody without knowing anyone.
