The Centre for Human Rights and Advocacy Network (CHRAN), a Civil Society Organisation in Akwa Ibom, has urged the Akwa Ibom State Government to reevaluate the law establishing the State College of Education, Afaha Nsit, Nsit Ibom Local Government Area. The organization advocates for upgrading the college to the status of a university.

In a statement jointly signed by its State Director, Otuekong Franklyn Isong, and Secretary, Barrister Christopher Ekpo, CHRAN expressed concerns about the declining student population at the College over the years. Parents appear to prefer universities offering four-year degree programs over the College, which offers a three-year National Certificate of Education (NCE) program.

Although section 2(c) of the Akwa Ibom State College of Education Law empowers the College to award degrees, CHRAN noted that this can only be done in affiliation with a university. The organization highlighted section 4(2)(c) of the law, which mandates the Dean of the Faculty of Education, University of Uyo, as a statutory member of the College Council.

CHRAN commended the Provost, Prof. Daniel Udo, and the College management for maintaining relative peace within the institution. The organization revealed its involvement in resolving a dispute between the College management and the trade union in 2022/2023, expressing gratitude to the Provost for addressing the issue and complying with directives from the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

The Centre called on unionists to collaborate with the College management to achieve the institution’s mission and objectives, emphasizing the need for a conducive environment free from conflict.

Highlighting infrastructure challenges, CHRAN decried the lack of a master plan, internal roads, electricity, and perimeter fencing at the College. It observed that developments are carried out haphazardly due to the absence of a master plan.

**Provost’s Response and Achievements**

In response, Provost Prof. Daniel Udo acknowledged CHRAN’s visit and emphasized his commitment to fostering a peaceful and secure learning environment since assuming office. He praised the State Government for providing funds that facilitated the successful accreditation of all NCE programs and 10 out of 11 degree programs at the College.
