Former Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, reaffirmed that the nation’s current challenges didn’t begin with President Bola Tinubu’s tenure.

Speaking at the 2024 Leadership Colloquium and Award organized by the Akinjide Adeosun Foundation (AAF), Ambode stressed the necessity of courageous leadership, particularly under Tinubu’s administration. Held at Alliance Francaise, Ikoyi, the event centered on “Economic Asphyxiation โ€“ The Wisdom of Authentic Leaders.”

Ambode articulated, “The challenges are not solely attributed to Mr. President; we must address them head-on without resorting to blame games.” He expressed confidence in Tinubu’s resolve to tackle Nigeria’s issues effectively.

However, Ambode also urged for executive reforms within the President’s coordination circle. He called on Nigerians to eschew blame games and embrace a supportive, resilient, and patriotic stance towards national development. “Unless we unite for Nigeria’s common cause, security challenges will persist,” he emphasized.

Tracing Nigeria’s historical challenges back 300 years, Ambode linked them to phenomena like slave trade and the “divide and extract strategy.” He advocated for a self-awareness strategy to navigate post-COVID-19 realities effectively.

Discussing authentic leadership, Ambode highlighted the importance of emotional intelligence and empathy towards citizens’ frustrations. “Leaders must stand with their people and demonstrate empathy,” he emphasized. Drawing from his gubernatorial experience, he underscored the significance of understanding the everyday struggles of ordinary citizens in policymaking.

In conclusion, Ambode emphasized the role of authentic leaders in instilling hope and confidence amidst adversity. “My empathy fosters stronger bonds with followership,” he concluded, stressing the reciprocal relationship between leaders and citizens in fostering positive societal change.
