The Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Akwa Ibom State has officially merged its structure into the All Progressives Congress (APC), with the governorship candidate of YPP in the 2023 elections, Senator Bassey Akpan, leading the delegation.
The event took place in Ukana Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, where the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, received the YPP members and described the exercise as ‘uncommon,’ occurring even when elections were not on the horizon.
Senator Akpabio expressed gratitude to the YPP for recognizing the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in repositioning and transforming the country for the better, even during their time as an opposition party.
The Senate President highlighted the unity and collaboration achieved in the Senate across party lines under his leadership, emphasizing the need for others to join the APC for the betterment of the country.
Senator Bassey Akpan clarified that the decision to collapse the YPP structure into the APC was not driven by any intention to contest elections in 2027. He pledged total submission to the leadership of Akpabio and President Buhari, expressing readiness to support the delivery of Akwa Ibom to the APC.
Akparawa Ephraim Inyang-eyen, the YPP candidate for Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, described Senate President Akpabio as the authentic leader of Akwa Ibom State. He characterized the merger as a destiny-driven move for the growth of the state and the development of the country. Inyang-Eyen expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for giving the South-South region another chance at the senate presidency.
The YPP members affirmed their commitment to promoting unity in Akwa Ibom State and expressed optimism about the APC’s increased strength in the state through the merger.
