In a bid to preserve the ecological balance and protect citizens’ interests, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, has issued stern directives against unauthorized excavation of borrow pits within the state. These measures come as part of a proactive approach to ensure a secure environment.
The warning, aimed at both contractors and residents, emphasizes that any excavation of borrow pits must receive prior permission from the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources. The ministry expressed concern over the detrimental impact of unchecked excavation activities, often carried out by project contractors, leading to significant environmental hazards and degradation.
Governor Eno’s stance against indiscriminate sand mining further reinforces the state’s commitment to environmental preservation. The Governor’s prohibition order on such practices aims to prevent the distortion of natural topography, environmental degradation, and the potential loss of valuable properties to ecological disasters.
During an inspection of the Udo Inwang by Urua Udofia streets erosion-affected area in Uyo, Governor Eno reiterated the necessity to halt unauthorized excavation, emphasizing that all forms of excavation, including borrow pits, must cease unless expressly permitted by the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources. He stressed that the erosion challenges often arise from unregulated mining practices.
Interacting with affected communities, Governor Eno expressed regret over the existing conditions and assured prompt government intervention. He directed the Commissioner for Works and Fire Service to assess erosion-prone areas and facilitate necessary steps for reclamation. This proactive measure aims to mitigate potential ravines and the subsequent destruction of lives and property.
Governor Eno’s visit to the Akwa Ibom State Agricultural Development Programme (AKADEP) headquarters underscored his commitment to comprehensive development. He urged collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Akwa Ibom Fadama, and AKADEP to advance the A.R.I.S.E. Agenda’s agricultural objectives.
Furthermore, the Governor addressed the need for well-maintained premises, emphasizing the release of funds for operational efficiency. He stressed the importance of using allocated resources for their intended purpose and instructed the Accountant General of the State to ensure timely subvention release for proper facility upkeep.
In line with the State Government’s agricultural initiatives, Governor Eno proposed that AKADEP premises incorporate demonstration farms, showcasing innovative crop species to visitors and farmers. This proactive approach aims to enhance agricultural awareness and promote the state’s agricultural programs.
These comprehensive measures demonstrate Akwa Ibom State’s commitment to safeguarding its environment, preserving its resources, and fostering sustainable development.
