The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has made significant legislative strides by passing three bills during its recent plenary session.
These bills, after being read for the third time, signify crucial steps towards addressing pressing issues within the state.
One of the bills passed is the Akwa Ibom State Bulk Purchase Agency Bill, aimed at establishing an agency for the purchase of bulk commodities in the state. This initiative seeks to mitigate the adverse effects of the harsh economic climate, particularly the high cost of living and inflation prevalent in the country.
Additionally, the Assembly passed a bill to amend the Akwa Ibom State Agricultural Loans Law, which aims to increase the amount granted as loans to individual farmers, corporate bodies, and cooperative societies. This amendment is crucial in providing enhanced financial support to agricultural stakeholders and fostering agricultural development in the state.
Furthermore, the Assembly approved the establishment of the Akwa Ibom State Infrastructure and Assets Management and Maintenance Agency through another bill. This agency is expected to ensure the efficient and accountable management of government assets, thereby enhancing sustainability and safety in the work environment.
The reports presented by the respective committee chairmen highlighted the widespread support for these bills from various stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress, Civil Liberty Organizations, NGOs, and individuals. Public hearings held on February 26, 2024, provided an avenue for extensive deliberations and input from stakeholders, ensuring comprehensive consideration of the proposed legislation.
In addition to legislative measures, the Assembly also resolved to prioritize the urgent renovation and upgrading of Okorote General Hospital in Eastern Obolo Local Government Area. This decision underscores the Assembly’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and ensuring the availability of essential medical services to residents.
The Speaker, Udeme Otong, has directed the Clerk of the House of Assembly to communicate the Assembly’s decisions to Governor Umo Bassey Eno for his assent. These legislative actions signify the Assembly’s dedication to addressing key issues and fostering development within Akwa Ibom State.
