The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has taken steps to investigate the alleged wrongful dismissal of five staff members from the State Polytechnic located in Ikot-Osurua, Ikot-Ekpene Local Government Area.

This move comes in response to a petition submitted by the affected workers, which was read during the plenary on Thursday, August 31.

The petition was presented to the Chairman of the House Committee on Justice, Judiciary, Human Rights, and Public Petitions, Hon. Aniefiok Attah. The document detailed the cases of the sacked employees: Effiong Simeon Dan, Akanama Bassey Edem, Effiong Okon Enidiok, Godwin Edet Okokon, and George Umoren Udoudo.

In response to the submitted petition, Hon. Aniefiok Attah raised the matter as an issue of urgent public importance during the plenary session. He presented the petition to the House and highlighted the request for the Assembly’s intervention in addressing the alleged wrongful dismissals by the polytechnic’s authority.

During the plenary, Speaker Udeme Otong presided over the proceedings and acknowledged the gravity of the issue. To ensure a thorough examination of the matter, Speaker Otong referred it to the House Committee on Education, led by Hon. Kenim Onofiok, who represents Oron/Udunguko. The committee has been tasked with conducting further legislative action in response to the petition.

The Speaker instructed the Committee on Education to thoroughly investigate the alleged dismissals and report back to the House within a span of two weeks. This legislative initiative demonstrates the Assembly’s commitment to upholding justice and addressing concerns that affect the welfare and rights of the citizens of Akwa Ibom State.
