The Akwa Ibom State government has announced a new initiative aimed at combating exploitation by middlemen and rising food prices by introducing redemption centers for government-issued food vouchers.

Governor Umo Eno unveiled this plan during a speech delivered at the All Nations Christian Ministry March First Sunday Service in Uyo.

Expressing concern over the exploitation of the current situation by middlemen who hoard staple foods and sell them at inflated prices, Governor Eno emphasized the importance of ensuring that food aid reaches those who truly need it. He stressed the need for proper management to prevent hoarding and resale at higher prices.

The proposed system will utilize a social register to identify eligible beneficiaries, who will receive food vouchers accordingly. Redemption centers will be set up across the state, including in local markets, where individuals can exchange their vouchers for essential food items.

To prevent fraud and counterfeiting, Governor Eno mentioned the implementation of security measures for the vouchers and warned against any attempts to forge them. Measures will also be taken to identify and apprehend individuals attempting to sabotage the process.

Governor Eno further assured support for farmers, stating that the Ministry of Agriculture would provide necessary inputs for cultivation and would be prepared to purchase surplus harvest from willing farmers.

This initiative reflects the governmentโ€™s commitment to addressing food insecurity and exploitation while supporting agricultural development within the state. It aims to alleviate the hardships faced by citizens due to escalating food prices and ensure that food aid reaches those in genuine need.
