The Akwa Ibom State Government has proudly welcomed two new CRJ 900 Bombardier series aircraft, enhancing the fleet of Ibom Air. Governor Umo Eno, who celebrated the arrival of these aircraft, announced plans for several upcoming projects in the weeks ahead.
He acknowledged that criticism can serve as a catalyst for improvement, stating, “If you want to do anything in this life and people don’t criticize, look back again and check.”
During a brief ceremony in Uyo, Governor Eno highlighted Akwa Ibom’s unique status as the only sub-national entity in Nigeria to operate its own airline. He reiterated his administration’s dedication to developing essential infrastructure without burdening the citizens financially.
The new aircraft were funded through a unique government approach that bypasses traditional high-interest public financing. Governor Eno emphasized the continuity of the previous administration’s efforts, particularly those of former Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel. He noted that critics have motivated his administration to persist with its initiatives.
In the coming weeks, Governor Eno plans to lay the foundation for an Aviation Village, kick off an international market in Ikot Ekpene, and inaugurate Judicial Quarters in Uyo, among other projects. He also announced the recruitment of 5,000 young undergraduates, who will each receive a monthly stipend of N50,000, and the approval of N1.2 billion for gratuities for retirees.
The governor further detailed ongoing projects, including roads, compassionate homes, and schools, as well as the operations of the Akwa Ibom food purchasing agency distributing food across local governments. He revealed plans for a four-star hotel in Abuja, aiming to revitalize idle properties.
Governor Eno anticipates that by next year, the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility will be operational, allowing the state to earn foreign currency. He also mentioned plans to partially open a new international terminal in December, with a full launch expected by the first quarter of next year.
Pastor Imo-Abasi Jacob, Chairman of Ibom Air, thanked the governor for his commitment, crediting his financial strategies for the airline’s growth. He noted that the acquisition of this fourth aircraft within a year reflects resilience and the governor’s dedication to the prosperity of Akwa Ibom.
Captain Mfon Udom, CEO of Ibom Air, expressed pride in the airline’s progress and highlighted the goal of expanding its network to connect more individuals to Akwa Ibom. Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Udeme Otong, commended Governor Eno’s financial prudence, emphasizing effective resource management without resorting to new loans from the assembly.
