The Akwa Ibom State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported a notable decline in road accidents, revealing that 15 individuals lost their lives, and 62 sustained injuries in various incidents over the past 10 months.

State Sector Commander Matthew Olonisaye shared this information during a press briefing in Uyo, emphasizing the positive contrast to the same period in 2022, when 28 fatalities and 164 injuries occurred.

Olonisaye attributed the reduction to the FRSC’s commitment to its mandate of achieving a 5% decrease in road crashes within the state.

He highlighted the importance of the ongoing West African Road Safety Week and World Day for Remembrance of Road Safety Victims, expressing the FRSC’s dedication to commemorating and supporting those affected by road accidents.

“As part of the activities for this year’s day, we are conducting public awareness campaigns throughout the city to emphasize the importance of enhancing one’s life.

We will also visit the emergency departments of state hospitals to show solidarity with road crash victims and provide them with encouragement,” Olonisaye stated.

The sector commander issued a caution to motorists, urging them to refrain from behaviors that could jeopardize the safety of road users, especially with the upcoming Yuletide season.

He further called on drivers to utilize the Ibom Computerised Vehicle Inspection Services (IBCVIS), established by the state government, to identify and address mechanical faults, ultimately contributing to a reduction in road crashes within the state.
