Akwa Ibom State Police Command reported the arrest of 269 individuals in the state during the second quarter of 2023.

The arrests were made in connection with various crimes, including murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, rape, and theft.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi, revealed this information during a press briefing held in Uyo, the state capital.

The arrests were attributed to factors such as the pre- and post-inauguration periods of the current government, the Eastern Obolo and Ikot Abasi crises, and the Nwaniba cult clash.

Among the apprehended suspects was Prince Thursday Okon, a former domestic staff of a vice chancellor in a private school in the state. Okon, together with his accomplices Saviour Sunday Luke and Richard Friday, allegedly orchestrated the kidnapping of his former boss. The police recovered N1.27 million in cash as part of the ransom paid, while N200,000 was found in one of the suspect’s accounts. The vehicle used in the operation, a Toyota Corolla, was also seized. The VC has since been reunited with his family.

Another arrest involved Aniekan James from Ikot Ndot village in Ukanafun Local Government, who shot his 35-year-old son during an argument. The commissioner also mentioned the arrest of Odudu Aniekan James, a suspected serial killer responsible for murders in Lagos and Aba, Abia State.

In a separate incident, the police apprehended Edu Udeme Ime from Mbak Etoi Village, Uyo, who was found in possession of a human skull. The suspect failed to provide a reasonable explanation for having the skull but named their alleged ringleader, who is suspected of involvement in ritualistic activities.
