The All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates for governor of Akwa Ibom disregarded the Wednesday signing of the state peace agreement.
Umo Eno, an aspirant for the PDP’s governorship, Obong Udofia, an aspirant for the APC, and Senator Albert Akpan, a member of the Young Progressives Party, were all conspicuously absent from the ceremony, which was hosted by the Akwa Ibom State Council of Elders.
The signing of the peace accord took place during an interactive session where the candidates discussed their proposals for the state. It was hosted in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, in the Ibom E-library complex.
Only nine of the Akwa Ibom governorship contenders, it was learned, were present at the ceremony.
The agreement was signed by Mr. Iboro Otu of the African Action Congress, Ekeziel Eyaetok of the African Democratic Congress, Dr. Ekwere Essien of the Action Democratic Party, and Obong Ekpo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
Participants included Senators Akpan Udoedeghe of the New Nigeria People’s Party and his counterpart from the Zenith Labour Party, as well as Akan Ekpeyong of the Boot Party, Ime Koffi of the Accord Party, Mr. Eyo Ekor of the Allied People’s Movement, and Senator Ime Koffi of the Accord Party.
In his remarks after the delivery of the candidate manifestos, Obong Attah, a former governor of the state, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the peace meeting.
The former governor said, “This is truly wonderful, and it is regrettable that people gave it either the wrong interpretation or high suspicion and therefore stayed away.
“Those who have come have seen the benefit of coming. And I want to believe that next time they will be better informed and that they will come, just as Akwa Ibom people are now better informed about their candidates.”
