The Akwa Ibom State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Sunny James, has declared that the union will persist with its industrial action until the federal government addresses the demands of workers.
Speaking to striking workers gathered at the Idongesit Nkanga State Secretariat, Comrade James affirmed that the strike would continue beyond the current day, pending a response from the federal government.
He emphasized the commitment of workers in the state to total compliance with the national body’s directive for an indefinite strike until the demands of workers are met by the Federal Government. Comrade James stated that after the current assembly, they would proceed to meet with the Governor of Akwa Ibom to discuss the issues.
The NLC leader in Akwa Ibom further announced plans to move around all offices in the state to enforce the nationwide strike as directed by the national body. The strike has resulted in the closure of banks, public institutions, and schools in compliance with the national action.
At the state secretariat, scenes of workers dancing to drumbeats were observed, indicating the solidarity of the labor movement in the ongoing strike. Security measures, including an operation quick response vehicle with stationed security operatives, were noted at the federal secretariat.
