Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, Ph.D., has announced plans to establish a sinking fund dedicated to intentional savings by the state government. The fund is intended to address unforeseen project needs and ensure financial sustainability for future generations.
Speaking at the opening of an expanded State Executive Council (Exco) session focused on the 2025 Appropriation Estimates, Governor Eno emphasized the importance of proactive financial planning. He explained that the session aimed to thoroughly analyze and refine the 2025 Appropriation Bill across all Ministries and Departmental Agencies (MDAs).
“As part of our budget, we must create a sinking fund through compulsory savings for projects that may arise unexpectedly and for future needs,” Governor Eno said. He highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in budget implementation, stressing that these values are central to his administration.
The Governor explained that the three-day Exco session followed the defense of proposed estimates by state ministries at the Ministry of Economic Development. He noted that the discussions would ensure that budget proposals align with the ARISE Agenda, the state’s economic blueprint, and the aspirations of Akwa Ibom citizens.
“Our goal is to ensure that every kobo spent reflects the expectations of the ARISE Blueprint,” he said, adding that the finalized budget estimates would be presented to the State House of Assembly for approval. Governor Eno stressed the need for budget proposals to move beyond outdated provisions and embrace the vision of his administration.
In addition to budget matters, Governor Eno expressed his appreciation to the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) for awarding him the 2024 “Media Friendly Governor of the Year” award. He credited his media team for their outstanding work in promoting the state’s achievements and dedicated the award to the Akwa Ibom media community.
The Governor also announced the upcoming inauguration of the State Inter-Labour Committee, which will oversee employment opportunities in the state. This committee will ensure transparency and fairness in hiring practices by companies operating in Akwa Ibom. Governor Eno, who recently launched the ARISE Youth Employment Portal, emphasized that the portal would provide job seekers with the necessary skills and connect them with potential employers.
The event featured goodwill messages from various state dignitaries, including the State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Ekaete Obot, the State ALGON Chairman, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, private sector representative Engr. Uwem Okoko, and the Head of Civil Service, Elder Effiong Essien.
Governor Eno praised his Senior Special Assistant on ICT, Dr. Frank Ekpenyong, for his role in bringing the job creation initiative to life.
