On Thursday, June 9, 2023, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, met with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.

After the meeting, Mr. Eno briefed reporters and stated that he solicited President Tinubu’s intervention in the Ibom Deep Seaport project, which is expected to provide jobs for thousands of people and change the economic fortunes of the state when completed.

Additionally, the Governor urged the President to complete the Calabar-Itu Road, and sought strategic partnerships with the federal government concerning the export license and free zone for the airport’s Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility.

Mr. Eno’s predecessor, Udom Emmanuel, commissioned an MRO facility, International Terminal, new taxiway, and apron extension at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, to kick-start international flights for the state-owned airline – Ibom Air.

Regarding the removal of petroleum subsidy, which has increased petrol price from N189 to N540 and inflicted economic pain on the people, Governor Eno plans to take measures to address the situation in his state next week.

His Deputy, Akon Eyakenyi, distributed palliatives to all local government areas in the state on Wednesday. However, the type of palliatives was not disclosed.

Some states have taken measures to cushion the effect of the hike in petrol prices for workers, such as reducing workdays for civil servants from five to three, as seen in Kwara and Edo States. Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State also promised to increase the minimum wage of workers when earnings accrue to the state from subsidy removal.
