The Akwa Ibom State government has announced plans to relocate residents affected by the ongoing reclamation of an erosion site in Ewet, Uyo metropolis.
This decision was made by Governor Umo Eno during an inspection of the project, which also includes a beautification initiative.
During an unscheduled visit to the project site, Governor Eno directed the Commissioner for Lands, Iniobong Ekong, to ensure the immediate relocation of residents to facilitate the smooth execution of the project. The governor emphasized that the project aims not only to address the major gully erosion in the area but also to reclaim the once inaccessible and hazardous ravine, thereby turning waste into wealth.
Governor Eno, while touring the site, instructed that the trees and forest within the area should be pruned to create a scenic environment. He expressed satisfaction with the advanced stage of the work and assured that upon completion, the facility would provide a relaxing environment for children and their parents from within and outside the state.
Chief Faysal Harb, Managing Director of BBulletin Construction Company Limited, the firm handling the project, provided insights into the progress. He mentioned that phase one of the recreational park, which includes a golf course, football pitch, lawn tennis court, basketball and volleyball courts, and a children’s playground, is taking shape.
Governor Eno’s first visit to the site a few months ago revealed a collapsed section at the Udo Inwang Street axis, near the Etim Okon Usanga intersection. He had assured that the dangerous ravine would be converted into a recreational facility to attract tourists. The previously collapsed and inaccessible areas have since been restored, and the project has been extended to prevent erosion from affecting the Uyo Custodial Centre.
The reclamation and beautification project reflects the state government’s commitment to transforming the area into a safe and attractive recreational facility, enhancing both the environment and the community’s quality of life.
