The Federal Road Safety Corp’s Akwa Ibom State Command has expressed its displeasure with the 3,541 drivers licenses in its possession that have yet to be claimed by their owners.
The command also announced that it will begin enforcing and recovering road fees in Uyo, the state capital, beginning on Monday, April 4 and ending on Friday, April 8, and that the exercise will be held quarterly.
The FRSC sector Commander, Matthew Olonisaye, revealed these during a joint news conference with the chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service, Mr Okon Okon, in Uyo on Friday.
During the exercise, the operatives will inspect vehicles with government number plates, Olonisaye stated, emphasizing that the driver of any vehicle with a government number plate must provide a legitimate approval letter or risk being arrested and having the vehicle impounded.
“We are beginning our road tax enforcement and recovery in Uyo starting from Monday 4 to Friday 8,” he said. The goal of the exercise is not to cause any hardship on the road, but to guarantee that all rules and regulations are followed.
“Those who use government number plates on their vehicles should be aware that we will inspect them, and anyone who does not have an allocation paper will have their vehicle confiscated and detained.”
โOne of the reasons why this exercise is important in Akwa Ibom State is because we have 3,541 unclaimed drivers licences at the board of Internal Revenue, this is totally unacceptable and we are not going to condone drivers driving on the road without drivers licence.โ
Olonisaye also cautioned the officers and men against extorting money from motorists or defaulters warning that anyone caught would be dismissed from duty even as he called members of the public to cooperate with the officials.
