The Akwa Ibom State Government has apprehended vendors implicated in fraudulent activities related to the ongoing kiosks validation exercise.
This development follows Governor Umo Eno’s directive to investigate reports of illegal resale of kiosks and other malpractice within the program. Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Charles Udoh, announced on Wednesday that several vendors were arrested for offenses, including multiple online registrations, resale of kiosks at inflated prices, data inconsistencies, and mismatched names during verification.
Udoh stated, “The kiosks confiscated from these culprits will be reassigned to deserving vendors who were unfairly deprived of this government initiative.”
Speaking to vendors at Unity Park in Uyo, the commissioner cautioned against exploiting the system and urged those who purchased kiosks above the official rates—₦100,000 for a kiosk or ₦30,000 for open spaces—to report to the ministry for assistance and further action by security agencies.
Udoh also expressed gratitude to Governor Eno for championing opportunities for the people, reiterating the administration’s commitment to fairness and transparency.
Governor Eno, represented by Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Enobong Uwah, officially opened the “Christmas Unplugged Season 2.0” celebration, emphasizing the importance of peace, unity, and economic growth during the festive season. Speaking at Unity Park, Uyo, the governor highlighted the significance of the event for fostering goodwill and providing business opportunities.
“This is a celebration; we don’t want any form of violence. Let us enjoy this season of love and goodwill together in peace,” he said, assuring that adequate security measures are in place for a safe celebration.
The event, organized by the Akwa Ibom Ministry of Culture and Tourism, will run for 30 days, featuring music, cultural displays, and exhibitions. Local government areas across the state are taking turns showcasing their cultural heritage, making the event an avenue for vendors, artists, and entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and build networks.
Governor Eno encouraged participants to seize the opportunity to expand their ventures, underscoring the value of experience and connections gained during the festivities alongside financial profits.
