Akwa Ibom Chief Judge Clarifies Title Misconception, Urges Governor for Judicial Support

by

Justice Ekaete Obot, Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, has clarified the public’s confusion over her title, emphasizing that she is a Chief Judge, not a Chief Justice—a title reserved only for Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Justice Kudirat Kekere Ekun.

Speaking at a Thanksgiving service for the 2024/2025 legal year, she urged people to address her appropriately, noting the distinction between the roles in the judicial hierarchy.

Justice Obot also appealed to Governor Umo Eno for the regular release of funds to the judiciary, highlighting that a lack of funding throughout 2023 had left the state’s judiciary grappling with debt.

She pointed out the pressing need for recruitment, as no new staff had been hired since 2012, despite the retirement of 316 staff in the past two years.

The Chief Judge further recommended establishing educational programs and skills training in correctional facilities to help reform inmates. Additionally, she called for the creation of a “Borstal Institute” to rehabilitate young offenders.

Governor Umo Eno assured the judiciary of the state government’s commitment to supporting the quick dispensation of justice. He also announced plans to construct a housing estate for serving judges, similar to facilities in Rivers, Bayelsa, and Lagos states, ensuring that Akwa Ibom judges enjoy improved living conditions.
